Dove House Academy

Maths

The ultimate aim of the maths curriculum is to prepare pupils for life after Dove House so that they are able to apply their skills in real life situations and employment.

Most pupils who arrive at Dove House have developing their numeracy skills and low self-esteem as outcomes on their EHCP, so developing their independence, resilience and confidence is crucial to helping them succeed in the future.

The Maths curriculum at Dove House School has been specifically designed to embed both the requirements of the full National Curriculum in maths whilst tailoring it to our pupils’ individual requirements and needs.

The Maths Department have a shared commitment to develop a diverse and engaging curriculum that challenges and inspires pupils.

At Key Stage Three, we work on filling in gaps in pupil’s knowledge and to ensure that every pupil is challenged and no pupil is left behind from their individual starting points to achieve their full potential.

At Key Stage Four, pupils work towards the qualification that is appropriate to their ability and challenges them to achieve their full potential, with our most able pupils progressing to GCSE. We offer a range of qualifications including; AQA Unit Awards, AQA Entry Level Certificate, Edexcel Award in Number & Measure, Edexcel GCSE in Maths.

Cross circular links are made across the Maths Curriculum and whole school foci of literacy and social communication skills (EPIC) are embedded in all lessons.

The maths schemes of work are carefully designed to ensure that topics are sequenced effectively and that time is planned into the SoW’s to allow repetition of topics.
