3D Design

3D Design provides an opportunity for pupils to develop their design and making skills by working on a series of projects that result in solid, three-dimensional outcomes.

Collectively, the projects make use of all the equipment and materials available in the classroom, including CAD/CAM facilities.

The course encourages pupils to work imaginatively and independently in a collaborative environment and fosters useful life skills related to practical competencies.

KS3 pupils do 4 units of 3D Design over two 9-week rotation periods.

In Year 7 pupils are acquainted with a workshop environment. The are taught basic making skills using the full range of materials and equipment in the workshop.

In Year 8 pupils learn to use of computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing. Learning is sequenced to enable pupils to develop their own design ideas and to make purposeful use of range of materials and media.

In Year 9 pupils learn to design products following a design brief. Pupils learn to conduct research, draw and model concept designs, and produce a quality final outcome using any materials and equipment with greater independence.

KS4 pupils work towards a GCSE qualification in Art and Design with a focus on three-dimensional products. They have 4.5 of contact time over a fortnight.

The course entails two coursework projects as well as an externally set task which begins in the Spring term of Year 11. The coursework makes up 60% of the final grade and the externally set task is worth 40%.

Pupils are provided the learning tools to be able to research different artists and designers, experiment with a range of materials and techniques, develop their own ideas and produce quality outcomes

Learning is sequenced to enable pupils to independently meet four assessment criteria set by the examination board.
